"The Bookseller of Kabul" by Asne Seierstad

This book was an interesting look at a family in Afghanistan. After reading the back of the book, I thought it would be more about the bookseller himself and how his selling books under Communist and Taliban rule became a symbol of freedom, but it is much more about the family dynamics than anything else. The marriage customs, gender roles, and the conflict between westernization and traditional Islam are the main themes of the book. The author lived with the family for an extended period of time and was given access into their lives. It's hard to tell what exactly the author was there for and what she was just told about. It is interesting to note that the main character in the book has taken the author to court in Norway, citing defamation of character.
